793 Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley
Squire, E.G. and E.H. Davis 1848 2nd Hard good
The cover has expert repair on the spine and corners with the heavily worn edges of the covers left unrepaired. While the actual report is in good or better condition with occasional chipping and short tears, the introductory material or "Advertisement" discussing the Smithsonian and the arrangements for publishing the manuscript is badly chipped. The only page in this Advertisement integral to the manuscript is the frontis, which is a portrait of the Marietta Group. This page is detached and has serious chipping. It also has a small library stamp on the upper left hand corner of the illustration effecting only a minuscule portion of the sky. One page is torn in half. The title page is chipped and detached. Again, the actual report is in good or better condition, particularly considering it is almost 170 yrs old. The table of contents and preface has limited chipping and one 3-inch lateral tear. There is a 5-inch tear from the bottom of page 1.There is one 3- inch tear which reaches one pipe illustration without loss. There is occasional chipping and a few short tears, small library stamps and marginal notes in pencil. There is some age toning but no foxing. The publication arrangement for this first Smithsonian publication included the right by Squire and Davis to privately fund the printing of a number of copies for their own use utilizing the same type, woodcuts and lithographic plates as the Smithsonian edition in New York and Cincinnati. This is one of those copies. I have gone to some trouble to describe the flaws in this book which may obscure the fact that, except for the Advertisement, this is a pretty nice copy of a very rare and very important book which would be a fine and important addition to any library.
